Sweet Home faced off last weekend against Stayton, the defending state champion in JBO Senior American baseball, grades seven and eight. The two teams met in the district tournament held Saturday in Sweet Home. Sweet Home, 15-1, is a member of the South Senior American league. Stayton is a member of the North Senior American League. Sweet Home opened with a 12-5 loss to Stayton then beat Mt. Angel twice in the double elimination tournament, 15-5 and 10-3, to reach the championship round against Stayton. Stayton beat Sweet Home 12-5 to win the district title. Sweet Home will be among eight teams moving on to state Friday and Saturday. “I think as long as we play well, we’ve got a good chance to place fairly high,” said Coach Tim Holly.
