The high school boys basketball team returned Friday, July 26, from an 18-team camp in Newport to end their summer season.
The Huskies opened their season at a 16-team tournament at Cascade where they lost in the championship game, said Coach Drew Emmert. The team played scattered games throughout the season and then hosted and won a tournament for all Linn County teams except Lebanon. Cascade filled in for Lebanon.
The Huskies beat Harrisburg, South Albany and then West Albany to win it.
Last week, the Huskies reached the championship game at Newport, losing to last year’s 2A champion, Western Christian.
On the way to the championship, the Huskies beat Marshfield, North Bend, Salem Academy, Umatilla and Newport.
The Huskies played a total of 25 to 30 games, Emmert said. They lost about five, he said.
The varsity team included Hunter Coulter, Cade Gaskey, Casey Tow, Jasper Korn, Zach Luttmer, Owen Towry, Brayden Keesee, Cole Baxter, Davin Guzman, Aiden Tyler and Austen Miller.
“We’re all juniors and seniors,” Emmert said. “That’s new for me.”
He’s optimistic about this team’s chances next regular season.
“We definitely put in the work we needed to help next year,” Emmert said.
