Softball team will face Gladstone in playoffs

The Sweet Home High School softball team is headed for Gladstone Wednesday, May 22, in the first round of the playoffs.

Game time is 5 p.m.

Ranked ninth in the state, the Gladiators finished first in the Tri-Valley Conference with a 13-2 record in league and 19-4 overall. It has scored 271 runs this season and allowed 107.

Eighth-ranked Sweet Home finished second in the Oregon West Conference with a 14-4 record in league and an 18-7 record overall. Sweet Home has scored 194 runs this season and allowed 104.

“We’re prepared,” said Coach Karyn Hartsook said Monday. “We’re continuing to prepare the next two days.

“We’re focusing on the little things to be able to make the big plays, make sure we’re mentally tough. I have a lot of kids that have played in big events. That’s helpful for their athletic maturity.”

The team’s pitching is coming right along, Hartsook said. Assistant Coach Emily Marchbanks has been an asset, improving the pitching staff.

The Huskies are improving at the plate, Hatsook said. “Our outfield is solid, and we’re fast.”

If they win, the Huskies will face Mazama or La Grande Friday.
