Sweet Home hosted its first full Meet of Champions ever Saturday and it was a good day.
The meet drew 34 teams, most from west of the Cascades, and all from 1A through 4A schools, for a total of just under 400 competitors, all of whom had to qualify to get into the meet.
“I think it was a great turnout,” said Coach Dakotah Keys. “Really, what we want is to allow kids to have best opportunity to perform well at the end of the season, have it really be an easy experience for the coaches. That’s what we’re trying to create. I think we did it.”
Two dozen of the competitors were from Sweet Home and the Huskies did well, the boys finishing second in the team points to Sisters, 101-82, and the girls finishing fifth.
Winners for Sweet Home were sophomore Tristan Calkins in the long jump (21-10) and a terrific slingshot finish for Tristan Saultz and Austin Sills in the 800, going 1-2.
Also winning was the boys 4×400 Relay team of Casey Tow, Noah Dinsfriend, Lance Hanson and Calkins, who finished in 3:38.30. Those four also combined for a season’s best time in the 4×100, finishing just behind Sisters in 44.73.
Though the Huskies weren’t on top of the medals stand in any other events, they were close in many, with numerous top-three finishes, including second in both girls relays.
They posted nine personal bests on the day.
“Our kids competed well,” Keys said, noting the finish in the boys 800. “You just see the confidence. That’s what coaches want to see right now – confidence.”
Though local residents didn’t appear to turn out en masse, Keys said he expects the event to grow and there were healthy crowds at every event.
“Obviously, a whole part of this is to let it grow. I think we definitely have the area to do it. Hopefully, it was well-received by other teams and the spectators. Hopefully, in years to come, there will be more community involvement and people coming out and watching. The plan is to make it that way.”
He credited veteran coaches and organizers Alan Temple and Billy Snow for the nearly flawless day.
“They put on the meet and they did a phenomenal job. Alan just grabbed this thing by the horsn. He got out there and made sure we were on schedule for everything.
“Hopefully they laid a good footing for Nathan (Whitfield) and me next year to go a little more soloish.”
In a meetApril 23 at Newport with Stayton, the Huskies finished second to the Cubs on both the boys and girls sides.
But it was a big day for personal bests, once again, as the boys posted 24 and the girls 17, at least one in nearly every event.
At press time, the Huskies were set to host nine smaller schools for a Last Chance Meet on Tuesday afternoon, April 30. Junior varsity athletes will get another last chance at their district meet on May 6 at Stayton.
The varsity district meet will be May 9 and 11 at Sisters.
