Huskies post some big performances on Junction City track and field

Sweet Home’s track and field athletes battled the elements – rain mainly, at the Junction City Invitational Saturday, but came away with some big performances.

Senior Noah Dinsfriend won both hurdles races and sophomore Tristan Calkins won the long jump with a leap of 21-4, a 10-inch PR and tops in the state 4A Division standings for a few hours, until senior Garrett Phelps leaped 21-9½ in a different meet later in the day.

“It’s going really good,” Coach Dakotah Keys said. “Everybody’s still kind of sore and tired because we are still training so hard. But we’re seeing good results and a lot of the kids are doing well.

“Noah had some good races. He stayed tough.”

Sweet Home didn’t enter every event and limited entries to an athlete or two in many, while others of the 18 teams at the meet loaded up with three kids in each event.

The Huskies placed sixth on the boys side and 10th on the girls.

Dinsfriend’s win in the 300 hurdles gave him the fastest time thus far in the season in the 4A Division – 42.44, just ahead of Kai Daniels of Newport (42.82), who was second at Junction City. Dinsfriend is also No. 1 in the 110 hurdles after running 16.29 at the Summit decathlon.

In the distances, both junior Tristan Saultz and freshman Eddy Martinez-Maya posted PR’s in the 1500, Saultz placing third in 4:33.20 and Martinez-Maya running seventh – winning a different heat – in 4:40.89.

“Tristan Saultz did really good in the 1500,” Keys said. “He’s one of those guys who is really sore and tired, I have him working so hard.”

The best finish of the day for the girls was junior Megan Hager’s second place in the discus, in a season’s best 105-5.

The hard workouts are partly due to the shortened season – a week on both ends because of the early state meet and the snow that hindered workouts during the first week, Keys said.

“We’re getting into that part of the season now when everybody is doing technique work,” he said. “The distance kids are doing high-intensity intervals and stuff. It’s fun to see the results.”

The Huskies will compete Wednesday with Cascade at Sisters, then will travel to the 33-team Prefontaine Rotary Invitational at Marshfield Saturday, April 13. Many of the participants will be southern Oregon and coastal schools that Sweet Home doesn’t see often, including Del Norte and Eureka from northern California.
