Sweet Home’s wrestlers placed second to Tillamook Saturday, Jan. 19, in the 4A Division of the Oregon Classic wrestling tournament in Redmond.
“The kids competed well,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “This is always a good weekend of wrestling We get to see people we don’t normally see, which is one of the reasons why we go to that tournament. It’s awesome.
The Huskies won their pool Friday with wins over Woodburn (69-7), Estacada (74-6), Sisters (72-0) and Henley (72-12). On Saturday, they beat Phoenix 60-8 and La Grande 42-27 before falling 51-25 in the championship match.
Thorpe said the Cheesemakers, who have beaten Sweet Home twice in tournament dual matches this season, got off to a “good start” in the lighter weights and “kind of got on a roll on us.”
“Tillamook is good, really good,” Thorpe said. It was Sweet Home’s second dual loss in tournaments to the Cheesemakers this season. “They are well-coached and their kids showed up and competed hard. Hats off to them.”
The girls were fifth in a field of eight teams, finishing 3-3 in the first-ever sanctioned girls-only tournament at the Oregon Classic.
The Huskies beat Thurston’s Red team 24-18 after a win over Warrenton (30-18) and a 21-12 loss to Century on Saturday. They beat Hillsboro 27-15, lost on criteria (first takedowns) after a 24-24 tie with Thurston’s Black team, and 30-9 to Bend on Friday.
Thorpe noted that the Huskies had to forfeit two of the eight weight classes, one due to injury and the other because they didn’t have a wrestler in the 190-pound class.
Senior Marissa Kurtz ran the table, and Thorpe said the team as a whole was competitive throughout the weekend.
“I was very proud of all of our girls, our women’s team and what we’re doing as a program, that we have the numbers to do it and that we have a competitive team. It was a good weekend, for sure.”
On the boys side, Jackson Royer (138 pounds), Robbie Yunke (145) and Travis Thorpe (152) were unbeaten.
Boe Baxter, at 160, had one loss – to returning state finalist and No. 1-ranked Parker Robinson of La Grande.
“We had some great efforts from guys who didn’t win every match,” Steve Thorpe said. “In a dual, it’s important not to get pinned and getting a major instead of a decision. It’s the points you get and the points you don’t give away that are vital.”
Others who wrestled well, he said, included Tristan Spencer, who also finished with only one loss; Robert Watkins, Brayden Newport, Hayden McDonald, whose only losses were to the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked wrestlers in the state at 170 pounds; and Nich James.
“You can’t say enough about all of them,” Thorpe said.
The Huskies will turn their focus to getting ready for the regional and state tournament, he said. They will compete this weekend at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions at Liberty High School.
Previous to that, they will host Junction City at 6 p.m. Thursday, which will include a junior high match as well, which will happen alongside the junior varsity match. That will also be Senior Night for 14 wrestlers.
The Tigers are improved this year, Thorpe said.
“It’ll be a good dual.”

Seven Sweet Home Mat Club wrestlers placed in the Oregon Classic Kids wrestling tournament held Sunday.
Macen Rosa was the top finisher for Sweet Home, taking first in the Bantam 85-pound class. Jesse Landtroop was second at Intermediate 59 and Bailey Chafin placed second in the girls Novice 77-80.
Finishing third were Jacob Sieminski at Schoolboy 90 and Kyle Sieminski at Schoolboy 71. Ethan Spencer was fifth at Schoolboy 136.
Also qualifying and competing were: Cody Sieminski, Riley Vaughn, Sam Barringer, Dylan Hartsook, Elijah Cruz, Kyle Zajic, Dillan Davis, Luke Rosa, Ryker Hartsook, and Kaden Zajic.
