Boys continue pile on two more wins

The Huskies continued piling wins on their boys basketball record last week, defeating Tillamook 53-34 Dec. 12 and Scio 60-48 Dec. 11 at home.

“Against Scio, we definitely had some stretches where we didn’t play as well as we need to,” said Coach Drew Emmert. The Huskies had a 20-point lead near the end of the third quarter, but they subbed out players to rest for the next day’s game. Their lead was cut nearly in half by the end of the game.

Sweet Home led 19-10 after a quarter and 38-26 at halftime. The lead grew to 55-40 by the end of the third quarter.

Scoring was balanced across the team. Jake Swanson led scoring with 12 points. Casey Tow added 11; Zach Luttmer, nine; Hunter Coulter, eight; Aiden Tyler, seven; Colton Smith, six; Zach Zanona, five; and Cade Gaskey, two. Playing but not scoring were Jasper Korn, Austen Miller, Braydan Keese and Owen Towry.

Garrett Workinger led Scio with 22 points. Lance Grossman added 15.

The Huskies moved on to face Tillamook the following night.

“We played a lot better that game,” Emmert said. “A lot of people contributed that game. Defensively, we were a lot more focused than the day before. They played a zone, so it brought us down as far as points go.”

The Huskies still pressed and forced a lot of turnovers, Emmert said. “Playing fast like that and holding a team to 34 points is nice.”

Tillamook looked tired in the third quarter, while the Huskies were able to sub in fresh players, Emmert said.

The Huskies led 9-6 after the first quarter and 23-13 at halftime. They expanded their led to 40-22 by the end of the third quarter.

Tow led scoring for the Huskies with 12 points. Zanona added nine; Tyler, eight; Gaskey, seven; Luttmer six; Smith, four; Swanson, four; Coulter, two; and Korn, one. Playing but not scoring were Miller, Keese and Towry.

Carter Kunert led Tillamook with 14.

“I feel good,” Emmert said, but he’s not content. “If we get content, things are going to go the other way,” but the team had a good week.

The Huskies had three games scheduled this week, traveling to Molalla Monday, Elmira Tuesday and hosting Central Linn at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
