Missing its top swimmers on the girls side, Sweet Home still handily defeated Blanchet, Stayton, Junction City and Kennedy in the Huskies’ season-opening meet Friday, Nov. 30, at home.
Freshman Jamie Seward led Sweet Home with individual wins in the 100 Freestyle and the 50 Backstroke, and swam the anchor for the winning 200 Freestyle Relay team as the Huskies scored 296 points to outpace Blanchet Catholic (226).
The Huskies, who were lacking several of their top swimmers due to a club schedule conflict, had no other winners, but Coach Doug Peargin said he was happy with the opportunity to give his rookies a chance to get a taste of competition.
“I thought our new swimmers stepped up and competed real well and all of our new kids swam at least two events,” he said.
On the boys side, Blanchet had too much for a young Sweet Home team, outscoring the Huskies 257-193.
Senior Brad Wolthuis was a double winner for Sweet Home, in the 100 Individual Medley and the 50 Butterfly. Dakota Seward was the Huskies’ other winner, taking the 100 Freestyle.
Sweet Home will be fully loaded Friday, Dec. 7, and it will probably be necessary as the Huskies get an early test at Newport, where the boys are defending state champions and the girls finished in the top 10 at state. Also in the meet will be Sisters, whose girls are back, largely intact, from a fourth-place finish at state.
The Cubs have a brand new aquatic center, which will give Sweet Home swimmers a taste of the big meet experience, Peargin said.
“We swam pretty well for this early in the season,” he said of the home meet. “We still have a lot of improvement in front of us to be competitive at state.”
