Volleyball team awaits its next opponent after swiftly dispatching the Cubs

Sweet Home’s volleyball team capped off a perfect league season with a quick three-set win over Newport at home Wednesday, Oct. 17.

“Wednesday was senior night and a great way to cap off a spectacular league season for our girls,” said Head Coach Mary Hutchins. “The seniors got to play a majority of the time and they did a great job working hard and communicating to take on Newport.”

The scores were 25-6, 25-8, 25-11.

“Overall, we controlled the tempo and pace most of the game and did a great job of staying in system on our side of the court.”

Sweet Home is the undisputed league champion this year for the first time in recent memory. The Huskies tied with Sisters in 1998, but lost a tie-breaker to the Outlaws to determine playoffs seeding that year.

As of Monday, Oct. 22, Sweet Home was seeded second and was awaiting the results of play-in games that were scheduled to be finished by Tuesday. The winners of the first-round games will move on to Forest Grove High School for the quarterfinals on Nov. 2.

“I’m very proud of the girls and my whole team this season,” Hutchins said. “They have taken on tremendous pressure at times and their perseverance and resilience has been a joy to watch and coach.

“We look ahead now to the first round of state on Oct. 27.  We will be hosting the game and we are practicing hard and getting mentally prepared to take on our next opponent.
