Harriers finish in middle of the pack at Tillamook Nike Invitational

Jessy Hart and Eddy Martinez-Maya were the top finishers for the Sweet Home cross-country teams Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Ultimook Hydrangea Race Nike Invitational at Hydrangea Ranch in Tillamook.

Hart, a junior and the lone girl running for the Huskies Saturday, finished in 23:24.27, 24th out of 126 runners in the varsity 5K race for 1A through 4A schools.

Martinez, a freshman, was 48th out of 206 runners and the third freshman finisher in the boys varsity 5K for 1A through 4A schools, running 19:35.00.

Sophomore Gavin Walberg was second for the Huskies, 74th overall in 20:33.57, followed immediately by junior Tristan Saultz, 75th in 20:36.27.

Senior Noah Dinsfriend was 85th in 20:55.83; senior Austin Sills was 101st in 21:15.12, just ahead of sophomore Treyson Smith in 102nd (21:16.20).

Sweet Home’s final finisher in that race was freshman Brian Frick, 153rd in 22:51.08.

The Huskies were 11th as a team in a field of 26, with 337 points based on the total of the finishes of their top five runners. Newport (130 points) was second and Stayton (191) was fourth.

In the junior varsity 5000, junior Zach Zanona was 45th out of 152 runners, in 23:11.59.

Sophomore Tristan Calkins was 50th in 23:32.71, a step ahead of freshman Nate Coleman, 51st in 23:33.32. Junior Eric Roddy was 103rd (25:36.24) and sophomore Jaren Adams was 129th (27:59.71) to give Sweet Home 10th in a field of 15 as a team.

The Huskies will compete Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Saxon Invite at Bush Park in Salem, starting at 9:30 a.m. The field will include a variety of schools, from 3A up to 6A, including a number of 4A teams that were not at the Ultimook meet.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, Sweet Home will host its first home meet in years, starting at 3 p.m. at Community Chapel. An open 5K race will be held at 6 p.m. Entry fee is $20, with proceeds benefitting the cross-country program.
