With the district track championships a week away, Sweet Home Coach Dakotah Keys is excited about where his Huskies are at, particularly after what he saw on the track the district meet will be held on May 10 and 12.
Sweet Home competed April 28 in the Sisters Rotary Invitational, the boys placing fifth out of 10 teams and the girls third – and that was without some of their top performers.
“A lot of good stuff,” Keys said. “Some of our kids were running tired and it was not the best of weather, but you can see everybody’s starting to compete right now.”
In the first 4×400 race of the season for the girls, Bethany Gingerich, Jessy Hart, Zoe James and Kate Hawken posted a time of 4:14.07 to win – the fastest clocking the girls have run since the 1990s.
The Huskies also dominated the 200, Gingerich (26.31), Hawken (27.31) and Hart (28.75) all posting personal bests.
In the boys hurdles, Noah Dinsfriend was a double winner for the Huskies, running a PR of 16.27 in the 110 before winning the 300 in 41.46.
In the 100, junior Lance Hanson ran 11.97 to break 12 seconds for the first time in his career and senior Cameron Taber broke the 11-minute barrier for the first time, running 10:54.67.
In the long jump, Connor Russell went 19-0½ for a five-inch PR.
And in the girls javelin, sophomore Hannah Powell broke 100 feet for the first time with an 11-foot PR of 103-2.
“The kids have confidence and they’re having fun,” Keys said. “They’re starting to feel better. The team’s really grown. It just speaks volumes as to how hard they’ve been working.”
The junior varsity athletes got an extra chance to show their stuff at the Cottage Grove JV Invite Tuesday, May 1.
The final regular-season meet for the Huskies will be the Regis Community Twilight Invitational Thursday, May 3, which will feature 30 teams, all except Stayton and Sweet Home 3A or below.
