Boys down Junction City in basketball to finish league after loss to Cottage Grove

Sweet Home beat Junction City 57-49 at home Friday to end its boys basketball season following a 63-50 loss to Cottage Grove on the road Feb. 13.

With the win, the Huskies tied Junction City for fourth in the Sky-Em League with records of 3-7 in league play.

Sisters, 9-1, took the top spot after beating Sutherlin 48-42 Friday night in Sisters. Sutherlin, 8-2 and second in league, had beaten Sisters 51-25 earlier in the season. Sutherlin’s only other loss in Sky-Em action was 54-46 at Cottage Grove, 7-3 and third in league. Elmira, 0-10, finished in sixth place.

Heading into the playoff season, Sutherlin is ranked 10th in Oregon Student Activities Association rankings. Cottage Grove is ranked 12th, and Sisters is ranked 13th.

In their final outing, the Huskies and Tigers tangled all game long before the Huskies were able to build a solid lead in the final minutes of the game.

Sweet Home won the first quarter 17-12. Estifanos Gerdes scored 14, including four three-pointers, in the second quarter to lift the Tigers ahead 30-28 by halftime.

The margin shifted slightly in the third quarter as the Huskies took a 41-39 lead.

Keegan Holly scored the Huskies’ only field goal in the final quarter, and he shot 7-8 from the foul line to help onto the win. The team shot 14-22 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Holly scored 20 points on the game to lead the Huskies, while Gerdes led the Tigers with 18 points.

The Huskies built a 15-10 lead in the first quarter, but Cottage Grove scored 21 in the second quarter to lead 31-25 by halftime.

The Lions stretched their lead to 46-38 by the end of the third quarter and then by another five points in the final quarter.

Holly led the Huskies with 14 points, while Jesse Ellingworth led the way for Cottage Grove with 26.
