With the district swim meet 10 days out, Sweet Home Coach Doug Peargin likes what he saw Friday, Jan. 26, from his Huskies as they faced two of the top 10 teams in the state.
“This was our best overall meet of the season,” Peargin said.
Sweet Home’s girls won all but one individual event and two of their three relays to handily outpace Sisters and Newport, with Stayton a distant fourth. The boys finished second to No. 1-ranked Newport, which showed why it has that ranking with an impressive display of depth. Rowland Lupoli and Rawlins Lupoli each won two events for the Huskies, and led the 200 Freestyle Relay team to a win, but the Cubs swept everything else, including the relays, placing at least two athletes in the top three in all but one individual event.
“We knew Newport was ranked No. 1 in the state if they swam up to their ranking,” Peargin said. “However, we swam real well ourselves. Our boys won five out of 11 events and put in the third-fastest time in the state in the 200 Medley Relay” – which the Huskies lost to Newport by roughly three-tenths of a second in 1:45.78.
Peargin said he was encouraged by his girls’ performance as well.
“I knew Newport and Sisters were top-10 teams at the state level and to handle them as well as we did makes me feel pretty good with only two weeks left before we go to the district meet,” he said. “Our girls winning nine out of 11 events gave us a margin big enough that the other teams basically had no chance.”
In addition to the boys 200 Medley Relay they posted a top-six state time in the 200 Freestyle Relay, he said. Individually, the Huskies posted top-six times in the state in 11 events, he said: Lauren Yon in the 200 and 500 Freestyle, Megan Hager in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, Sarah Hewitt in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke, Mia Davis in the 100 Butterfly, Rawlins Lupoli in the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke, and Rowland Lupoli in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly.
Sweet Home has one more meet before districts, when Cascade, North Marion and Toledo visit at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1.
