Wrestlers leave Reser’s with two placers, eyes on regional

It’s time for Sweet Home’s wrestlers to focus on the regional tournament.

Winding up a brutal schedule that ended Saturday with Reser’s Tournament of Champions at Liberty High School, the Huskies need to recover, Thorpe said.

“We’re not healthy right now,” he said after Sweet Home left Reser’s, considered one of the toughest tournaments in Oregon, with two varsity placewinners – 126-pounder Jackson Royer, who was sixth, and 138-pounder Travis Thorpe, who finished sixth after forfeiting his final two matches due to injuries.

“Right now, our focus is on getting healthy,” Steve Thorpe said.

Royer, he said, wrestled a “great” tournament, losing two close matches.

“It was just an outstanding accomplishment for him.”

Ricky Yunke “got caught” and ended up not placing, “which happens in this tournament,” Thorpe said.

Nich James did not place but won a 4-3 overtime decision over Lebanon’s Landon Kisling, his first win against Kisling this year.

In the junior varsity division, Levi Baird placed second at 195, and the Huskies got more points from their middleweight wrestlers, with Justin Kurtz fourth at 138, Zak Fox fifth at 145, CJ Mitchell fourth at 152 and Noah Moore sixth at 160.

The middle weights have been productive for Sweet Home in the last few weeks, including Thursday, Jan. 18, at Junction City, where the Huskies won 57-22, losing the bulk of their matches on the light and heavy ends. They wrestled there because of a scheduling problem with their original host, Philomath.

Thorpe said it was a “fun night” because Junction City hosted Sweet Home in a junior high dual on one mat and high school JV and female wrestlers on another before the main varsity event.

He noted particularly outstanding performances from 132-pounder Gavin Wahlberg and Damion Schocker at 170, both of whom scored falls after stepping in to wrestle at the varsity level.

“I like our depth and unselfishness where guys will do that,” Thorpe said. “I’m excited to keep building off that.”

The Huskies will close out their home season Thursday, Jan. 25, with an endowment dual at 6 p.m. against Sisters, which will also be Senior Night. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
