Winding up an intense four straight days of wrestling, Sweet Home ran out of gas Saturday at the Oregon Classic tournament in Redmond.
The Huskies finished fourth, after losing 55-24 to La Grande, a team they had beaten two days earlier, and 47-25 to Tillamook.
“I se this schedule up to be tough,” Coach Steve Thorpe said Monday in a hoarse voice. “I didn’t estimate how tough it was going to be to wrestle four days in a row. We just kind of hit a wall (Saturday). We had injuries. That’s how it goes.
“I was proud of how we competed.”
The Huskies started their competition streak with a dual at home Wednesday, dominating Elmira 66-15 in a fashion that can only be described as clinical. Sweet Home wrestlers posted nine falls out of the 11 matches they wrestled, six of them in 1:09 or less.
Thursday, they traveled to Prineville for the Crook County Clash, beating Estacada 49-21 and losing 44-24 to Marshfield without putting their full line-up in the match, Thorpe said.
At the Oregon Classic Friday, Sweet Home beat won its pool with victories over Banks (60-21), Henley (66-15), La Grande (42-33), Philomath (69-12) and Scappoose (49-25), before suffering two losses on Saturday.
Thorpe said the schedule was not favorable for his team, which left its hotel at 5:30 a.m. Friday for weigh-ins at the and didn’t get back till 9:30 p.m.
“We were there for 15 hours,” he said. “You’re competing, you’re up and down. It was a lot on the kids, the coaches, the parents and everybody.”
In the second match against La Grande, he noted, the Huskies forfeited their upper four weights.
Jackson Royer (126), Robbie Yunke (132) and Ricky Yunke (145) all pinned their way through all four days. Travis Thorpe (138) won all his matches by falls or major decisions.
He noted that Tristan Spencer, in the line-up for Sweet Home for the first time this year after starting the season with a broken thumb, posted six wins for the Huskies at 106, and Hayden McDonald beat “a couple of very good wrestlers, returning state place-winners” at 160.”
Boe Baxter, at 152, improved as the Oregon Classic progressed, Thorpe said, after Baxter lost his opening match.
“We’ve just had some really consistent guys. That’s a solid crew. When you put guys that are going back to back to back to back and they’re consistent and tough, and fight through whatever pain and sickness and give it everything they’ve got, that’s good for your team.”
He said he had for some match-ups the Huskies didn’t get last week, but Sweet Home may see those teams at Reser’s Tournament of Champions this Friday and Saturday.
On Thursday, the Huskies travel to Philomath for matches against the Warriors and Alsea.
