Coach Doug Peargin was pretty pleased with his swimmers last week after they beat two of the three schools he considers the Huskies’ toughest competition: Salem Academy and Philomath, in a four-team meet at home Thursday, Dec. 14.
The girls won with 192 points over Salem Academy (94), Philomath (74) and Stayton (44).
The boys’ competition was closer, with the Huskies on top with 174 points, ahead of Salem Academy (156), Philomath (111) and Stayton (67).
“This was our best overall meet of the year,” Peargin said. “Salem Academy, Philomath and Sisters will be our biggest challenge at districts this season. Sisters girls were fourth at state last year and lost no one to graduation.”
He liked what he saw from his girls in the pool, though.
“Every first-place finish that we had in this meet would have been a qualifying time to go to state last year,” Peargin said. “I thought we’d be tough on top, but those kids that placed second through sixth really gave us a lot of unexpected points.”
The boys were not far behind, he said.
“Like the girls, this was our best meet of the season. All but two of our first-place finishes would have qualified for last year’s state.”
The Huskies have three upcoming meets over the Christmas break.
They will be at the Stayton Invitational at 9 a.m. on Dec. 3, then will swim at Newport Dec. 28, where the Cubs boys are ranked No. 1 in the state. They will then travel to Lebanon on Jan. 6, where they will get a chance to test themselves against competition that is all 5A and 6A level.
“This Christmas break we’ll get a great chance to see what we’ll be seeing at district and state,” Peargin said. “We’re a quarter of the way through the season and we’re doing pretty well. But if we want to win district, we still have a ways to go.”
