Spikers start season with win over Douglas

Sweet Home’s volleyball team got off to a good start Thursday, Aug. 31, with a season-opening three-set win over Douglas.

The Huskies won 25-22, 25-10 and 25-11 over the team that ended Sweet Home’s season last year in the playoffs.

Statistics from Thursday’s game were unavailable at press time.

“I was proud of our effort as a team,” Coach Mary Hutchins said. “We came out strong, we finished strong. We kept our intensity as the games went on.”

The non-league contest gave Sweet Home a chance to polish up its rotations and “work out some kinks,” she said.

She said senior veterans Ally Tow and Kayley Lopez and junior Sunhee Bitter “did a good job” in providing steady leadership during the game.

The Huskies will go on the road to face Stayton, which lost to 5A-Division Central and 3A-Division Blanchet Catholic last week, on Tuesday, Sept. 5, then will play at Newport, which lost 3-0 to No. 2-ranked Tillamook, Thursday, Sept. 7.

“It is going to get tougher,” Hutchins said. “Our goal is to continue to find success.”
