SH wrestlers scattered far and wide on Oregon teams this summer

Sweet Home wrestlers are scattered across the country, beginning their summer competition schedule.

Robert Watkins (126 pounds) and CJ Mitchell (145) spent last weekend in Pocatello, Idaho with the Oregon team at the Turf Wars Freestyle Western Duals.

Oregon placed second in Greco and seventh in freestyle.

Meanwhile, Travis Thorpe (138) and Nich James (170) wrestled with Oregon’s team at the Cadet National Duals in York, Pa. June 16-17.

Oregon placed third in Greco and fifth in freestyle in its division.

Thorpe and James are also scheduled to wrestle in July at the Cadet nationals in Fargo, N.D.

In other action, 138-pounder Kobe Olson will wrestle in the Junior National Duals beginning Wednesday, June 21, in Oklahoma City.

“This is the first time Oregon has sent a team there in years,” said Coach Steve Thorpe of the duals tournaments.

“We’ve made that a priority for the Oregon Wrestling Association.”

Also. Katen Edwards, Marissa Kurtz and Lexi Schilling are scheduled to compete in the women’s nationals, also in Fargo.

This week, Steve Thorpe will leave with six wrestlers for the June 24 Wrestern Regionals Kids Folkstyle championships in Pocatello. The six who are going are Bantams Jesse Lantroop and Kyle Vajec, Novices Kyle Simienski, Jake Simienski and Ethan Spencer, and Schoolboy Tristan Spencer.

Following that, Swet Home will host its annual Santiam Wrestling Camp July 8-11, hosting the Oregon Cultural Exchange Team, which will go to Russia, and the Cadet and Junior national teams. Also expected is a team from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Sweet Home’s Bryce Coulter is scheduled to wrestle in Russia with Oregon’s team later this summer.

“It’s exciting to be part of what we’re doing, with what all these kids are doing, managing their time,” said Steve Thorpe.

“It’s tough to play baseball and football and wrestle. These are guys who are going to be running businesses one day because they’ve learned to manage their time and they’re doing extra.”
