Huskies move up rankings with more PR’s in track

Despite the likely loss of one of their best girls from a team that already was far smaller than normal, Sweet Home had a good week on the track and field last week.

The Huskies hosted a “Last Chance Meet” Tuesday, April 25, then sent their top athletes to Willamette University Saturday for the Meet of Champions, where they held their own.

“The whole team, overall, did really well,” Coach Dakotah Keys said. “The kids are excited. They tried new stuff at the Last Chance Meet. Then they went right into the Meet of Champions.”

The one who didn’t compete in Salem was junior Bethany Gingerich, who injured a leg during the Last Chance Meet.

“Obviously, she was doing really well,” Keys said of Gingerich, who leads the league in the 400 and is second in the 200 and 300 hurdles. “We’re doing recovery stuff. If she can’t come back this year, hopefully she’ll be doing some summer stuff.”

The boys 4×400 relay team of Wes Parker, Noah Taraski, Austin Stevens and Nathan Hager cut 3½ seconds off their previous best time to place third at the Meet of Champions, putting them fifth in the state with districts two weeks away on May 11-12, at Sutherlin.

“All of them have PR’d by two to four seconds in the 400,” Keys said.

Tanner Sayers had a “big-time” 13-second PR in 3000, Keys said. That made three consecutive PR’s in 10 days, for a total of 33 seconds for the sophomore.

Hayden Nichol, also a sophomore, PR’d in the 200 at MOC, cutting another tenth of a second off the PR he’d posted in the event on Tuesday to finish in 24.27.

“It was a good meet,” Keys said.

Tuesday, May 2, will be the Sky-Em junior varsity district meet at Cottage Grove, which will give the young Huskies a final chance to post varsity times and marks, Keys said.

The varsity will compete Friday, May 5, at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove, a varsity meet.

“Everybody seems really excited this year,” Keys said.
