Sweet Home’s track and field athletes continued steady improvement in a three-way non-scoring meet with Cottage Grove at Sutherlin on Thursday, April 20.
“Everybody’s improving,” said Head Coach Dakotah Keys. “Some people are just kind of maintaining right now, which is great because we’re working really hard.”
The Huskies are hosting their Last Chance Meet Tuesday, April 25, beginning at 4 p.m., with Cottage Grove, Elmira, Stayton, Mohawk, Triangle Lake, Monroe and the Oregon School the Deaf.
The meet provides a final opportunity for athletes to make it onto the varsity squad and to quality for the Meet of Champions this Saturday at Willamette University.
The boys have athletes who have qualified or are close in 10 events for the Meet of Champions, which brings together most of the best 4A and under track and field athletes in the Willamette Valley. The girls also have qualifiers or alternative times or marks in 10 events.
Field events start at 11:30 a.m.; track events at 1 p.m.
“Now we’re starting to taper a little bit and work on speed and turnover,” Keys said. “The time are going to get faster; they’re going to be jumping further, jumping higher.”
Noah Dinsfriend was a double winner for the boys, taking the 110 hurdles in a personal-best 17.12 and winning the 300 as well. Also winning was Casey Tow in the high jump, Austin Stevens in the long jump and Eric Blanchard in a personal-best 13-1 in the pole vault, along with the boys 4×400 relay.
Keys said Blanchard’s extra work in the pole vault with coach Mark Vanderville at Raising the Bar in Springfield, who also coached Keys in high school, is paying off, along with Blanchard’s being willing to try new events.
“This year he’s getting out of his comfort zone,” Keys said. “I tell him, ‘I’m having you run the 100, I’m having you run the 200.’ He’s getting faster and he’s getting stronger. He’s a good leader on the team. He’s working hard and it’s paying dividends.”
Bethany Gingerich won the 400 and the 300 hurdles, the latter in a personal-best 50.18. Gracie Olson won the pole vault in a personal-best 8-6 and Dana Hiett finished first in the triple jump.
“We don’t have a lot of girls,” Keys said. “It’s unfortunate. We put a lot of pressure on them. We tell them, ‘We’re going to spread you thin and you’re going to be asked to do a lot of things. And they’re willing to do it and they’re all doing really well.
“Man, it’s exciting. I can’t wait for these next couple of meets.”
