Wrestling: Olson leads 5 placewinners at Reser’s

Five Sweet Home wrestlers placed at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21 as the Huskies finished ninth in a field of 22 of the best teams in the state.

“That one is always just a grind of a tournament,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Both the varsity and JV tournaments are both so, so tough.

“Going into it, we’ve been fighting the same flu that everybody else that has been fighting – other teams, our town, our school.”

Senior Kobe Olson was the Huskies’ top place-winner in the varsity tournament, finishing second at 132 pounds after a loss in the finals to Bennett Mesa of Roseburg, the defending state 6A champion.

“Kobe has placed three times at Resers and that takes a lot of work,” Thorpe said.

Freshmen Jackson Royer placed third at 106 pounds and Travis Thorpe was fourth at 126. Royer beat Ryan Bibler of Dallas 8-5, who had pinned him earlier in the season, an “incredible feat,” Steve Thorpe said, and pinned the No. 1-ranked 6A wrestler in the state, Roseburg’s Tristan David.

Travis Thorpe pinned Roseburg’s Bailey Humbert, “a very good kid,” according to Steve Thorpe. “Fourth place in that tournament is quite an accomplishment.

“I’m very proud of how the kids competed.”

Other place-winners were Jake Porter, sixth at 152 pounds, and Bryce Coulter, fourth at 182.

Porter lost his opening match to three-time state 3A champ Marco Retano of Culver, the battled back through the consolation bracket to face Retano again in the fifth-place match, losing 15-3.

“He had some incredible wins as fought through the back door,” Thorpe said. “He lost a good match to Retano for fifth place. He’s wrestling as good right now as I’ve ever seen him.

“Bryce is getting better and better with every tournament. He’s not new to this tournament and he knew what to bring to it.”

In the junior varsity tournament, which featured many wrestlers who will be in the state championships, Tyler Fincher won the 138-pound title for the Huskies, a “good” performance for him, Thorpe said.

Other place-winners were: Bryce Porter, second at 120; Dillon Stutzman, fourth at 126; Zak Fox, third at 132; and CJ Mitchell, fourth at 145.

“That was the first big tournament success this year for Bryce,” Thorpe said. “I think Zak Fox wrestled the most matches (seven) of anybody. He wrestled hard. C.J. Mitchell wrestled up a weight class.

“I’m very proud of them. It’s like being in a regional championship.”

With the regional tournament fast approaching on Feb. 10-11, the Huskies will wind up their regular season with two home matches, against Sutherlin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, and against Cottage Grove on Feb. 2.

Thorpe said the Sutherlin match will be Night of Champions for Sweet Home, during which all state place-winners from the past will be recognized.

“Everybody needs to come and honor them,” he said.
