Husky swim teams win both sides at Albany Sprint Meet

Sweet Home’s swim teams, at full force and actually getting to swim a meet together for only the second time this season, made it count Saturday, Jan. 21, with wins by both the boys and girls at the District 3 Sprint Meet, held at South Albany High School.

The girls outscored second-place Philomath 418.5 to 281, while the boys also finished ahead of the Warriors, 433-268.

Coach Doug Peargin said the meet brings together all the teams that will be competing in the District 3 regional meet Feb. 10-11, which will also be held at South Albany.

“This is a good tune-up meet going into the last couple of weeks before district and state,” he said. “We were able to swim all of our swimmers in at least two events in this meet and really got a chance to see what our different combinations might be for relays in upcoming meets.”

Moira Curtis, a newcomer to the team and to competitive swimming, finished third in the girls 100 Freestyle with a five-second personal-best in that event, in 1:04.46. Kristen Adams also finished with a nice PR in the event, cutting three seconds off her previous best to swim 1:11.43.

Stewart Curtis cut two seconds off his previous best in the boys 100 Free to finish third in 58.16.

Individual winners for the Huskies were freshman Megan Hager, who swam 1:05.78 in the 100 Individual Medley to beat teammate Lucie Davis (1:07.26) and Sean Wolthuis in the boys 100 IM (1:03.55), Nathan Hager in the boys 50 (23.25) and 50 Butterfly (25.56), Davis in the 100 Freestyle (56.64), Jessica Coats in the girls 50 Butterfly (29.06) and 50 Backstroke (29.57), Rowland Lupoli in the boys 100 Freestyle (51.35), Rawlins Lupoli in the boys 50 Backstroke (27.70), and Brandon Vasfaret in the boys 50 Breaststroke (30.71).

The boys also won the 200 Medley Relay and both teams won the 200 Freestyle Relays.

“We swam real well as a team, with lots of PR’s and it was the first meet of the season that we had all but three swimmers there at the same time,” Peargin said.

The Huskies will host Sisters, Newport, Stayton and Toledo on Friday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m.

“We’ll probably be loading up some on our relays in this meet to see what adjustments need to be made for District,” Peargin said. “We still need to work on some rudiments, but now one of the biggest things we have to do is stay healthy.”
