Sweet Home’s varsity wrestlers finished second in their pool and ninth overall at the 36-team Northwest Duals tournament held at the Linn County Expo Center Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30.
The Huskies’ only loss on Day 1 was to Chiawana (Wash.), coached by former Husky Shannon Stover.
Sweet Home held Chiawana to the least points and scored the most of any team in the group in the 51-16 loss as the Riverhawks rolled to the top of the Norm Davis group.
Sweet Home was 4-1 going into Friday’s championship bracket after defeating Woodburn (52-23), Centennial (52-25), Sunset (57-24) and Cottage Grove (72-6).
Seeded eighth in the top bracket, the Huskies lost a close 37-31 match to David Douglas to go to the back side of the bracket, where they beat Sherwood 59-21 and West Albany 45-24 before falling to Ponderosa, from the Sacramento, Calif. metropolitan area, 37-10 to place 10th.
Elk Grove, a California wrestling power, beat Newberg 43-21 to win the championship bracket. Chiawana placed third with a 40-33 win over Redmond.
“We didn’t get blown out, but I don’t think we competed very well against Chiawana,” Coach Steve Thorpe said, noting that weather conditions have prevented his team from competing consistently over the last few weeks, due to cancelled or postponed tournaments.
“I was proud of how we came out and wrestled, how the kids competed. You want to win every time you step out there, but this weekend there were a lot of victories in losses. We had kids do incredible things for us by wrestling unselfishly. In a dual meet, that’s what have to do.”
Two of those were Ricky Yunke and Justin Kurtz, who bounced between 145 and 152 pounds over the nine duals they wrestled.
“It’s very unselfish to have guys do that for us,” Thorpe said. “There’s a lot of strategy that goes into dual-meet tournaments. You try to get points where you can find them.”
Jackson Royer was too sick to wrestle after weighing in at 113 pounds Thursday, but came back Friday to pin two opponents and lose his final match 3-0 to Ponderosa’s Trevor Monroe.
Josh Rice won two “signature” matches in “important duals” at 220 pounds for Sweet Home and 160-pounder Jake Porter went 8-1 over the two days, all of the wins coming by falls or major decisions.
Kobe Olson, at 138 pounds, also went 8-1, including a 3-2 “strategy” decision over David Douglas’ Islam Usmanov. His lone loss was to West Albany’s Sawyer Myres in a 10-8 barnburner.
“Kobe Olson wrestled as good this weekend as I’ve ever seen him wrestle,” Thorpe said. “His loss to Sawyer, what a match. Two kids going at it like that. Sawyer is a true 138-pounder and Kobe will be a 132-pounder.”
Also on Thursday, Sweet Home’s junior varsity wrestlers competed at the Elmira Four-Way Duals as a varsity team after another school failed to show, placing sixth out of eight teams.
The Huskies went 1-3, beating Siuslaw 36-21 and losing to Elmira 48-18, Forest Grove 55-24 and Sheldon 44-30.
Sweet Home will open its Special District 2 dual-meet season at Elmira at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, then will compete Friday, Jan. 6, at the Linn County Championships at South Albany, beginning at 10 a.m.. The Huskies then host Junction City and Philomath at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11.
