Coach Steve Thorpe and his Huskies were back on the mats Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Lebanon’s Weisbrodt Invitational, and Thorpe was happy.
Sweet Home had sat at home the previous week instead of competing at Lebanon and Thurston in duals tournaments because of cancellations due to icy conditions.
“We lost two tournaments for total of nine duals,” Thorpe said. “You can’t substitute anything for matches. Practice doesn’t substitute for matches.
“I was really happy to reschedule Dick Weisbrodt and get to wrestle people we don’t typically see in duals.”
The Huskies are 6-1 in duals after wins over Madison (78-6), Hillsboro (60-12) and South Albany (56-21). Their lone loss was to Thurston, 40-30.
“I knew Thurston would be tough,” Thorpe said. “If we had won a couple matches we lost, that we should of, we wouldn’t have lost. But a lot of things happen in duals.”
Seniors Kobe Olson and Jake Porter, and freshman Travis Thorpe won all their matches.
Steve Thorpe said his team is dealing with illness and injuries, which is normal for this time of year.
“We had guys that weren’t at their fullest. Ricky Yunke wasn’t fully healthy and still competed. Dillon Stutzman has been wrestling sick and he’s a little banged up.
“That’s what we always get from them.”
The team overall is doing well, he said. The Huskies will compete Friday and Saturday at the 36-team Northwest Duals at the Linn County Expo Center Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29 and 30.
The field includes schools from Washington and California, as well as some of the major players in Oregon wrestling. Tournament pools are named after well-known retired Oregon wrestling coaches, including Sweet Home’s Bruce Davis, which is the pool in which the Huskies will face off with Centennial, Cottage Grove, Sunset, Chiawana (Wash.), and Woodburn. Shannon Stover of Chiawana and Cottage Grove Coach Kyle Temple, along with Thorpe, are all Sweet Home alumni in that group.
Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. both days and admission is $7 for adults or a two-day pass for $12, and $5/$8 for seniors and students. Children under 5 are free.
“We’ve missed out on some duals and typically we’d have another tournament behind us, but in this tournament we’ll hopefully pick up some more,” Thorpe said.
