Sweet Home’s track and field team posted another batch of personal bests last week in a triangular meet with Cottage Grove and Sisters at Husky Field.
The Huskies placed second in the team standings, behind Cottage Grove on the boys side and behind Sisters on the girls.
The Lions showed why their boys team is one of the favorites in the district, showing depth and speed in outscoring the home team 184-92.
But Coach Allyson Bodenbach said the meet was a primarily a training event for her team, particularly the sprinters, who had performed well five days before at Elmira and had been working hard in the interim.
“That day was really just about competing for the kids. It’s hard to come off meet five days prior, and really compete. This past week I really challenged the kids to really compete. I wasn’t expecting fabulous times.”
The majority of the Huskies’ 41 personal bests came from the field.
Josie Knight posted a lifetime best in the shot, throwing 35-6 to place first in that event, and TJ Baham upped his personal record in the pole vault by four inches, jumping 12-4 to place first.
“He was pretty excited,” Bodenbach said, noting that Baham also posted a PR in the 300 hurdles. “He had a good day.”
The other winners for the boys were Egan Shamek in the long jump (20-5¾) and Garrison Whitfield in the javelin (159-5). Whitfield also threw a 12-foot PR in the discus (102-1).
On the girls side, Bethany Gingerich won the 100 (13.51) and the 400 (1:03.70), and anchored the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams to wins. The other winner for the girls was Caylie Trewin, who finished in a three-way tie for first in the high jump (4-8).
Another big performer last week was freshman Noah Moore, who posted big PR’s in the shot (36-7½) and the javelin (130-0).
In the distances, freshman Tanner Sayers ran an 18-second PR in the 3000 (10:52.97) to place fourth by five-hundredths of a second to fellow freshman Colby Simerol of Sisters. Another big PR came from sophomore Cameron Taber, who bettered his 800 time by 18 seconds (2:38.68).
“Some freshmen and some that aren’t freshmen are coming into their own,” Bodenbach said, noting that junior McKenzie Yoder has made big strides for the girls in the 400. “They’re figuring out that they can be athletic.”
Sweet Home’s athletes are “really banged up,” she said, “but that’s really normal, this time of the year.”
She said the team will start dialing back on hard workouts soon in preparation for the district and state meets, which are four and five weeks out, respectively.
The Huskies host Sisters and Sutherlin Wednesday, April 20, at 4 p.m. Athletes who qualify will compete Saturday at the Meet of Champions at Willamette University in Salem, beginning at 11 a.m.
