Huskies post some quality times on track

In their season-opening track meet, the Huskies showed both their youth and a lot of promise, Coach Alysson Bodenbach said.

Returnees from last year set a dozen personal-best marks in the non-scoring meet at the Pleasant Hill Icebreaker Wednesday, March 16, which also included Creswell, East Linn Christian Academy, Harrisburg, Lost River, Lowell and Elmira, along with the hosts.

“I wouldn’t say we were starting this season where they left off last year, but we’re in pretty good shape to PR through this season,” Bodenbach said.

She noted that this was a “get-your-feet-wet” meet. “We’re so young. We have so many freshmen who don’t know where they’re going, so this meet gave them a chance to figure that out.”

Also, she said, a lot of Sweet Home veterans tried events they usually don’t compete in.

Bodenbach has established a weekly honor for a single performer, and the inaugural recipient is junior Nathan Hager, who turned heads with significant performances in the 800 and 1500, both events he’d never competed in in high school.

Hager ran 4:52.59 in the 1500 to place seventh in a field of 33, then finished second behind Elmira’s Finn King in the 800, in 2:18.43.

Sprinters Trey Reed, Egan Shamek and Bethany Gingerich all had a good start.

Shamek, a senior, set a lifetime best of 11.66 in the 100 and Reed finished 4/100 of a second off his lifetime best to win the 200 in 23.71, though he didn’t run the 400 as fast as he’d hoped.

Gingerich won the 400 in 1:04.24, the only win by a Husky girl, and Reed was the boys winner in that event in 52.95. Shamek’s win in the 100 was the only other individual victory by the Huskies, though the 4×100 boys relay team, anchored by Shamek, won in 45.35.

“Egan’s got so much more to go,” Bodenbach said. “This is a testament to where he’s going, for sure.

“Trey’s 400 was not what he’d hoped it would be, but he understands the process and he’s being OK with not getting his best at the very beginning of the year.”

In the field, thanks to uncooperative weather during the last few weeks, the Huskies haven’t had a chance to get up to speed in the technical events, coaches said.

But Jacob Erickson matched his lifetime high jump best with a 5-6, and Garrison Whitfield PR’d in the javelin, throwing 151-5. Gracie Olson set a lifetime best of 6-6 in the pole vault – the meet was the first time the vaulters had actually jumped over a bar this season, Assistant Coach Billy Snow said.

Shelby Dinsfriend bettered her PR in the shot by a foot with a throw of 22-9.

“It’s super early,” Bodenbach said. “We have a lot of kids coming to conditioning in spring break, which is good.”

Also competing in the meet were a number of East Linn Christian athletes who live in Sweet Home.

Austin Linville jumped 5-10 to win the high jump and Sydney Nichol ran away from the field to win the 1500 in 5:09.10.

The Huskies will not compete this week during spring break. They are scheduled to return to action Saturday, April 2, at the Junction City Invitational, which is expected to include Siuslaw, La Pine, Scio and Toledo, as well as some of the teams they saw last week.
