SHJH wrestling season ends with three state place-winners

Capping what turned out to be a very productive season for the Tigers, three Sweet Home Junior High wrestlers placed in the Oregon Middle School State Championships held Saturday, March 12, at Woodburn High School.

Travis Thorpe placed second at 125 pounds, Jackson Royer was fifth at 102 and Brayden Newport was fifth at 110.

Also competing was Nick James who did not place at 160 pounds.

Their performances finished a big year for the Tigers, who won their district and regional championships and sent 14 wrestlers to the tournament that produced those four qualifers.

Out of 99 teams at the state tournament Sweet Home was 10th.

“The team, overall, came together when they had to,” Coach Greg Newport said. “It was a long season – twice as long as we usually wrestle. It was tough but the kids liked that. It challenged them.”
