Husky wrestlers notch some ‘big wins’ at Northwest Duals

Sweet Home’s wrestlers placed 10th out of 37 teams Dec. 29 and 30 at the Northwest Duals hosted by West Albany at the Linn County Expo Center.

The Huskies finished 4-1 in their pool, their only loss on Tuesday going to Chiawana of Washington, 41-32.

That put them into the championship bracket on Wednesday, where they won two and lost two, to Hillsboro, 49-27, and to North Marion, 37-34, a match Coach Steve Thorpe said “We shouldn’t have lost.”

“I honestly believe there were two duals there we should have won,” Thorpe said of the Chiawana and North Marion matches. “That’s one of those details that at this time of year we know where we need to improve.”

Tyrel Miller, wrestling at 145 and 152 pounds, went 9-0, with two forfeits and seven pins, giving up only two offensive points in the process.

“He was very ‘on,’” Thorpe noted.

Also having a good couple of days was 220-pounder Dalton Doerfler, who went 7-2, beating some “good wrestlers,” Thorpe said.

“He had some big wins. It’s nice to have that on the upper end.”

He said he appreciated his team’s willingness “to do what they were asked to” in lineup shifts during the dual matches.

“Jake Porter is doing a lot of that. It’s very nice,” he said.

Also making Thorpe happy is how seniors such as Miller, Kobe Olson, Joe Rasmussen and Gavin Baskin are delivering quality wins for the team, he said.

“When seniors start winning matches like that, you’re a better team,” he said.

Rasmussen lost by falls in his first two matches, then pinned his next six opponents before losing his final match decision. Baskin finished with four pins and Olson finished with three falls and two major decisions.

Olson lost a major decision Peyton Bell of Hillsboro and by a fall to Cache Campbell of Silverton, but Thorpe noted that Bell is a defending state champion and Campbell is a three-time state placewinner.

“Those are the matches we’re trying to find at this time of the year,” Thorpe said.

Friday the Huskies will participate in the first-ever Papé Linn County Championships, hosted by Lebanon, which includes all high school wrestling teams in the county. Matches start at 9 a.m.

“Michael Cox, from Lebanon, put all the work into it,” Thorpe said. “It was his idea. It builds wrestling in the area.

“We’re pretty excited about what we’ve got going on. Moving into the second half of the season, we’ll start narrowing down our goal, tuning up. We know that what happens in February is what matters.”
