SH Sr. American team rallies for trip to state tourney

Sweet Home’s Senior American baseball team advanced to the state playoffs in Corvallis with a second-place finish in the district tournament last weekend.

Coach Jim Hagle’s players beat Philomath 10-4 on Friday and lost 10-4 to eventual champion Central on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, Sweet Home was down 5-2 to Corvallis entering the bottom of the seventh. But they scored four runs to win 6-5, as Micah Stewart drove in Zach Zanona for the winning run.

“The kids rushed the field,” Hagle said. “It was pretty cool. You don’t get an opportunity to do that very often. It was a lot of fun.”

Sweet Home lost 12-2 to Central, a big and powerful team, later in the day.

Hagle’s team is 25-10 going into the state tournament, which starts for Sweet Home at noon Thursday, July 23, at Williams Field, 990 NE Conifer Blvd. in Corvallis.
