Alumni round-up: Basham wins trail 50-miler

Amanda Basham was the winner among the women in the Cayuga Trails 50 May 31 in Ithaca, N.Y.

Basham, 25, of Beaverton set a women’s course record of 8:11 for the 50-mile course, 11 minutes faster than the previous record. The scenic course featured approximately 10,000 feet of elevation change and was the site of the USA Track and Field Trail National Championship in 2014.

She ran 2:54 on April 20 in the Boston Marathon.

Her 2015 race schedule also includes the Speedgoat 50k at Snowbird ski resort in Utah on July 25, Squamish 50 Mile on Aug. 22 in Squamish, B.C., Run Rabbit Run 100 Mile on Sept. 18 at Steamboat Springs ski resort in northern Colorado, and The North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Mile Championships on Dec. 5 in San Francisco.

After a disappointing 10th-place finish in the PAC-12 decathlon championship, Dakotah Keys will look to do better at the NCAA championships this week at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Keys failed to clear a height in the pole vault in the PAC-12s, ending his streak of three straight conference titles. He finished third in last year’s championships with a personal-best score of 8068 points for the competition, which awards points based on an athlete’s time or mark in each of the 10 events.

The decathlon will be held Wednesday and Thursday, June 10-11. Events start with the 100 meters at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and the 110 hurdles at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Katie Virtue was named to the 2015 NAIA Softball All-World Series Team after Oregon Tech lost to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 8-1 in the 35th Annual NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa on May 27.

Senior Jordan Hood threw a three-hitter for Lindsey Wilson, one by Virtue, in the win, which eliminated the Owls, who were appearing in their fourth World Series. OIT finished with a 47-16 record, the second best finish in school history.

Hood finished 19-2 in four World Series appearances, posting an 0.82 ERA in 25.2 innings. She has allowed three total earned runs, struck out 19 and given up seven walks.

Oregon Tech was fresh off a 16-inning marathon the previous night, which had lasted 4-hours and 34 minutes.

Virtue, a freshman outfielder, finished the season third for the Owls in hitting with a .392 batting average in 186 plate appearances, scoring 63 runs – second-highest on the team, and a .479 on-base percentage.

Thirteen local women were among the finishers in the Newport Marathon and Half Marathon May 30.

Shawna Yunke was the top Sweet Home finisher in the marathon, running 3:44:03. Also finishing the 26.2-mile course were Sarah Coulter (4:17:13), Lisa Saultz (4:19:12), Kelly Sautel (5:25:10), Rachel Tyler (5:25:09), Stacie Voight (5:34:42) and Sarah Welch (5:17:42).

Sarah Gaskey was the top half-marathon finisher from Sweet Home, running the 13.1 miles in 1:52.47. Also finishing were Angela Moore (2:02:25), Racheal Sawyer (2:04:46), Alissa Melkvik (2:08:18), Heather Harris and April Seward, who finished side-by-side in 2:54:27.
