Girls fall behind early to Westside

Slow out of the gate, the Huskies weren’t able to close down an early 10-point deficit against Westside Christian, losing 37-31 at home on Dec. 30.

Running a press all game, Westside took a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, said Coach Steve Brown. The Huskies broke it the first quarter so Brittany Brownell could score a pair of layups.

They worked around that press to score 13 in the second quarter while holding Westside to nine. The Huskies trailed 25-19 at halftime. Westside increased its lead to 34-27.

The girls continue to work on fundamentals every practice to help cut turnovers, he said. If they could cut them by a third and shoot them at 50 percent, it would turn games around.

“When they do the right thing,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

But old habits are hard to break, Brown said, and that’s where ball handling problems and errors creep in.

The team is still in a building phase, and it can be a painful process, Brown said.

Jordan Miller led scoring with 13 points. Jessica Stockman added 10.

Lexi Rodriguez led Westside scoring with 13 points.
