Sweet Home’s girls and boys both left the competition in their wake Friday, Jan. 10, during a three-way swim meet at home.
The Husky girls scored 101 points, ahead of Central (40) and Taft (21), and the boys outscored Central (49) and Taft (44) with 76 points in what Coach Doug Peargin said “may have been our overall best meet of the season.”
The boys posted 14 personal-best times in their 11 events and the girls 200 freestyle relay team of sophomores Makayla Nelson and Esther Gunselman, and freshmen Jessica Coats and Lucie Davis set a school record of 1:47.9. The girls also posted 12 PR’s in winning 10 of the 11 events.
Nathan Hager (200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke) and Jaeger Howatt (50 and 100 Freestyle) were double individual winners for the Husky boys, with Ryan Yon adding a win in the 200 IM.
For the girls, Elea Hewitt (200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle), Lucie Davis (100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke) and Jessica Coats (50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke) were all double winners, and Esther Gunselman added a win in the 200 IM.
But it is the also-rans that have Peargin fired up, he said.
“I knew before the season started that we would be solid on top,” he said. “What’s exciting now is the newer swimmers not only competing for places but starting to beat more experienced swimmers from opposing teams.”
On 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, the Huskies will host Salem Academy, which tied Sweet Home’s girls for seventh place at state last year.
“They have four girls that placed in last year’s state meet,” Peargin said. “This is our first real test before district.”
