Weather puts damper on openers for hoops, wrestling

The snow and ice on the gorund in Sweet Home has resulted in cancellations of high school basketball and wrestling openers over the weekend.

The girls and boys basketball teams were unable to play Redmond and Ridgeview on Friday and Saturday, and the wrestlers’ Perry Burlison Classic Tournament at Cascade was cancelled.

The wrestlers are to host Stayton, Molalla, North Marion and Sutherlin on Wednesday, Dec. 18, in a meet originally scheduled for Dec. 10.

The basketball teams did get some court action Dec. 4 in a jamboree at Central Linn.

The girls varsity basketball team had just seven players that night, with Harlee Brendle, Jessica Stockman and Courtney Kent out sick, said Coach Steve Brown, but despite the shortage, he found reasons to get excited.

“I think we didn’t have very many turnovers,” Brown said. “We shot the ball fairly well. I was extremely encouraged.”

The girls hit a lot of free throws, he said. Playing 12-minute games, they lost to Elmira by eight and Central Linn by 10 or 12 points.

The Huskies made a few small errors against Central Linn, Brown said, but “the other team was tough.”

The junior varsity had a good night, he said, winning 8-6 against Junction City and Central Linn.

Overall, the Huskies played well although they could’ve scored a few more points, Brown said. “I think we would have done well this weekend (with the canceled games). We’re not there yet, but we’re on the road.”

The boys lost two games during a jamboree the same night.

Neither program is planning to reschedule games.
