Girls beat La Pine twice

Katie Virtue made things easy for her team, scoring in 30 seconds or less to take an instant lead against La Pine in girls varsity soccer on the way to 3-0 and 4-0 wins.

The Huskies defeated La Pine 3-0 on Oct. 8 at home and 4-0 on the road on Oct. 9 in a makeup game.

In the first game, the Virtue scored 26 seconds in the half. Haley Kent followed up with the second goal about 15 minutes into the half on a pass from the side.

Virtue rounded out Husky scoring in the second half dribbling to the middle and kicking a long shot over the goalkeeper’s head.

On the road Wednesday, Virtue kicked in her first shot in 30 seconds.

Kent followed up off a corner kick after it bounced off the post. The Huskies led to 2-0 at halftime.

Allison Wickline scored a penalty kick. Kent drew the penalty out while dribbling toward the La Pine goal, but Wickline kicked the penalty shot.

Maddee Hawken finished off the game when she caught a bounced shot from Katy Currey. Hawken knocked it right back into the corner of the goal.

Goalie Natalie Currey probably touched the ball just three times in the first game, and Hannah Jewett touched it four times, Santana said. They both did a good job covering for Kent at goal.

Santana said Kent will head back to goalie this week as they face tougher opponents.

“Every game, we’re playing better and better,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “They play the game good. They’re looking pretty confident.”

Facing Cottage Grove, Elmira and Junction City next, they’ll need to make quicker passes and shoot faster, Santana said. “If we do that, we should be in great shape for the rest of the season.”

The team was scheduled to travel to Cottage Grove Tuesday, host Elmira Thursday and visit Junction City on Monday.

The Huskies are 2-2-2 and tied with Junction City in league play. They are 3-4-2 overall.
