Sweet Home Swim Club swimmers brought home four state championships and a host of other top finishes in various championship meets in July.
Lucia Davis, 14, dominated the distance freestyle events, winning four state titles at the Oregon Swimming Long-Course 13-and-Over Championships at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham July 25-28 – in the 800 Freestyle (9:26.22), the 400 Freestyle (4:32.76) and the 1500 Freestyle (18.06.37).
Rawlins Lupoli, 12, won a state championship in the 50 Breaststroke, in a time of 35.50 at the Oregon Swimming Long-Course 12-and-Under Championships at Albany Community Pool July 13-14. Lupoli also took second in the 200 Breaststroke (2:52.58) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:19.14).
Megan Hager, 11, was third in the 100 Free (1:06.14), the 50 Butterfly (33.57) and the 400 Freestyle (4:57.48).
Sweet Home’s girls placed sixth, with only four swimmers, out of 45 teams at the 13-and-Over Championships, beating some big-city teams that were more than three times their size in terms of numbers, Coach Junia Calhoon said. Combined, the boys and girls were 11th. Tigard-Tualatin was the girls team winner with 764 points, followed by Bend (217), Salem Bobcats (178), Portland Dolphins (161), Hillsboro (123) and Sweet Home 101.
Other top place-winners for Sweet Home were Lauren Yon, 13, second in the 1500 Freestyle with a 33-second PR (19:06.06) and Makayla Nelson, 14, third in her age-group 1500 Freestyle with a 24.5-second personal best (19:04.18).
In the Under-12 Championships, Chloe Tyler, 8, placed third in the 100 Backstroke (1:44.65).
At the Western Section Long Course Championships July 16-23, also at Mt. Hood Community College, which included 114 teams from 14 western states, Davis qualified for her first-ever finals in the women’s 400 Freestyle with an 18th-place finish in a personal-best 4:29.10.
She competed against competition that Coach Junia Calhoon noted included grizzled veterans.
“The seniors are all ages, including college kids,” she said.
Also, the 800 Freestyle relay team of Davis, Makayla Nelson, Lauren Yon and Hager qualified for the sectionals meet, swimming 9:06.43 to finish 35th.
