Jakob Hiett set a sophomore record in the 3000 Friday, running by himself the entire race, and the Huskies posted 17 personal bests in a track and field invitational meet hosted by Lebanon Friday.
Sweet Home got a taste of big-school competition at the event, which limited entries to two competitors per school per event, which left the Huskies out of the running in many, due to the general inexperience of the team, of which some 40 percent were newcomers to high school track at the beginning of this season.
Sweet Home had only one or no finishers in 14 of the 34 events, including two relays, and the scoring reflected that as the boys finished ninth and the girls eighth out of nine teams.
Despite the lack of depth, there were plenty of PRs.
“It was a pretty good meet,” Coach Billy Snow said. “We didn’t load kids up.”
Hiett ran 9:04.27, an 18-second PR, as he left the field behind in the first 200 meters and eventually lapped the last runner, in the final 400 meters. His time broke Mike Payne’s time of 9:14.3, set in 1992.
“Mike Payne was a very, very good runner,” Snow said. “That was very cool to see.”
Spencer Knight “had a great day,” the coach said, posting two PRs, in the 100 (11.55) and 200 (23.84).
“He looked good in all his events,” Snow said. “He’s really coming on.”
The jumpers also had a good day, “by and large,” he said.
Freshman TJ Baham added a foot to his pole vault to go 9-6 and junior Ashton Stutzman cleared 6-0 in the high jump for the first time.
The Huskies will host a final tune-up meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, against Jefferson, Pleasant Hill and McKenzie, while junior varsity competitors will finish their season Tuesday, May 7, at the JV Districts at Elmira.
“We still have some figuring out to do, where we’re going to put people and what other teams are going to do,” Snow said. “There are some events where we don’t have anybody. We have a lot of beginners.”
The good news is that the Huskies are relatively healthy as they look ahead to the district meet, in which preliminaries and the 3000 finals will be Thursday, May 16, with finals on Saturday, May 18, at Cottage Grove. The top two league finishers will qualify for state.
