Huskies don’t look too great on CG track, but coach says don’t jump to conclusions

Sweet Home’s track and field squad was a little tired Thursday, April 25, on a trip to Cottage Grove to face two of the league’s best teams – the Lion boys and girls and La Pine’s boys – – and the Huskies looked like it.

“We kind of loaded them up a little bit,” Coach Billy Snow said, pointing out that the district meet that begins in two weeks, May 16, is the target of Sweet Home’s training.

“They were tired. They were running on dead legs. I think they’ll be fine when we get back at it.”

Particularly with Sweet Home athletes trying events that weren’t their specialties, Cottage Grove’s boys took charge, scoring 101 points to La Pine’s 73 and 49 for Sweet Home. Junction City was fourth with 43 points.

On the girls side, Cottage Grove’s throwers and sprinters led the Lions to 97½ points, well beyond Sweet Home (62½), Junction City (61) and La Pine (32).

“We’re not an overly strong team, particularly on the guys side,” Snow said. “Cottage Grove has lot at the top.”

Jakob Hiett was a double – and the only – winner for the boys, taking the 1500 in 4:16.53, close to his PR, and the 800 in a personal-best 2:03.47, with Trever Olson placing third in his first attempt at the distance, in 2:10.65, which got the coaches’ attention.

Kyle Wodtli was second in the javelin with a huge 13-foot PR of 138-4.

On the girls side, Courtney Kent won the 400 in 1:03.74 in the absence of Cottage Grove’s Kristine Dunn, who has the fastest time in the state in all divisions in that event (56.92), but was limited to the 4×400 on Thursday. Sierra Swanson was the Huskies’ other winner, taking the 800 in 2:49.78.

“We were in a transition period (in training) and the kids were kind of unaware – they were dead,” Snow said. “They were a little discouraged, but we weren’t. We saw some pretty good things.”

The Huskies will be back in action Friday at the Rob Allen Invitational at Lebanon, which will include 5A Division teams Bend, Dallas and South Albany along with the hosts, North Salem and Sprague from the 6A, and Scio, one of the top teams in the 3A division, along with East Linn Christian and Sweet Home. Only two athletes are allowed per team in each event, so the competition will be all-varsity.

Field events start at 4:30 p.m., with track events at 5:45 p.m.
