It wasn’t the prettiest outing for the Huskies but they got some high-altitude workouts Thursday at La Pine in a three-way meet with Sisters.
A long and rough bus trip coupled with some inconsistency from meet officials led to some break-downs, including a re-run of the girls 200 that Coach Billy Snow decided not to have his leading runners participate in, since they’d already run nearly the entire distance before officials got the race stopped after the timer malfunctioned.
“The announcer was great but beyond that things went downhill quick,” Snow said.
Winners for the Husky boys were Jakob Hiett in the 1500 (4:31.37), Nick Richard in an all-Sweet Home, all-freshmen 3000 (11:41.52) and Ashton Stutzman in the high jump (5-10).
La Pine’s Jeremy Derosiers won three events to pace the Hawks to a team win of 84 points, a gap of 35 over Sweet Home, in which La Pine boys won 10 of the 17 events, including a sweep of the top three spots in the 400 and the discus.
On the girls side, the Huskies were second to Sisters, which showed similar dominance en route to 87 1/2 points to Sweet Home’s 58.
Jade Corliss was a double winner for the Husky girls, taking the shot put (34-2) and the discus (91-9, a personal best).
“Jade had a pretty good day,” Snow said, noting that Corliss also PR’d in the javelin.
Another PR came from freshman sprinter Josie Knight, who won the 100 in 13.87 to break 14 seconds for the first time in her high school career.
“Josie had a good 100,” Snow said. “She didn’t break down in her form.”
Other winners were Courtney Kent in the 300 hurdles (50.85), both relay teams and Sierra Swanson as the lone girl in the 3000. Swanson also was Sweet Home’s lone entrant in the high jump, posting a 4-6 PR in that event.
In the pole vault, Nick Mattson cleared 11 feet for a personal best and sophomore Shawn Worthen had a big PR of 42-0 1/2 – 2 1/2 feet over his previous best.
Wyatt Hayes posted PRs in the 100 (12.34) and 200 (25.57) and Snow said the senior will “be able to crack our short relay,” especially after the Huskies have lost Kyler Gaskey to knee surgery.
“It hurts when you lose someone like Kyler, who has big meet experience and is a leader,” he said. “
The Huskies will travel to Cottage Grove to face La Pine and Junction City Thursday, April 25, then will be at Lebanon for the Rob Allen Invitational on Friday, May 3.
“We’re just trying to get the kids ready for districts,” Snow said. “It’s nice that we have one meet a week now. This will be a good week.”
