Sweet Home’s swim teams ended their dual meet season Tuesday, Jan. 29, with a pair of wins over North Marion, 82-69 for the boys and 81-78 for the girls.
“We had lots of personal best times and are now starting to cut down on our yardage and getting read for district,” Coach Doug Peargin said.
Ryan Yon (200 Freestyle), Victor Stupin (50 Freestyle), Grant Jones (500 Freestyle) and Jaegar Howatt (100 Freestyle) were all individual winners for the boys. For the girls, senior Naomi Gunselman won the 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke in her last appearance in the Sweet Home pool, while Makayla Nelson (200 Individual Medley) and Natasha Benson (200 Freestyle) also contributed wins for the Huskies.
The 10-team district championships will be held Feb. 8-9 at South Albany Aquatic Center, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The district champion in each event automatically qualifies for the 4A/3A/2A/1A state championships, held the following weekend at Mt. Hood Community College.
The next fastest eight times out of the entire state, called wild cards, will qualify for state behind the champions from the four districts in the state.
Entering the meet, Sweet Home has four individual top seeds in Nelson (200 and 500 Freestyles) and Gunselman (200 IM, 100 Butterfly), as well as the top-seeded 400 Freestyle Relay team for the girls.
The highest seeds among the boys is Howatt, third in the 50 Freestyle, and Hilburn, third in the 200 Freestyle, with Victor Stupin right behind in fourth in that event, as well as the 500 Freestyle and Hilburn also fourth in the 100 Butterfly.
Entry for the district meet is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Programs are also $2.
