Sweet Home’s swimmers are 10 days away from the district championships and their times are coming down as the Huskies’ heavy workout schedule begins to pay off.
Sweet Home hosted Sisters and Stayton Thursday, Jan. 24, and although the girls were outscored 70-63 by Sisters, both teams showed they will be in the mix for some state berths at the district meet Feb. 8-9 at South Albany.
“We do more before 7 a.m. than most people do all day,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “Lack of numbers has been our biggest adversary this year. We compete real well with all of the teams with meet with until it comes to depth. If we get into trouble, that’s where it happens.”
Ryan Yon (200 IM and 500 Freestyle), Naomi Gunselman (200 IM, 100 Backstroke) and Emily Thompson (100 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle) were double event winners for the Huskies, while Makayla Nelson (100 Freestyle), Justin Hilburn (200 Freestyle) and Jaegar Howatt (50 Freestyle) were individual event winners for Sweet Home.
The Huskies are hosting North Marion Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m. in their final meet before districts. The North Marion meet will also be the team’s senior recognition event.
