Sweet Home lost the 4A division Oregon Classic title to Crook County Saturday but it was a close loss.
The top-ranked Cowboys outscored the Huskies 43-33 – after Sweet Home gave up 12 points in forfeits after injury and sickness took two of its wrestlers out.
The Classic final was the eighth dual the Huskies had wrestled in four days, after beating Newport and Central Wednesday in a league match.
“It was a pretty big week of wrestling for us,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “That’s a lot of wrestling.”
The Huskies defeated Central 72-10 and Newport 66-15, but Thorpe said there were some individual matches that were very competitive.
“This league is not a real wrestling league except Stayton and Cascade,” he said. “Except for individuals. That’s what we focus on.”
Against Newport, Anthony Hardee pinned Joshua Connor, who was sixth in the state last year at 106 pounds, in the 120-pound match.
“Anthony was down 13-0 to the guy and hung in there and pinned him,” Thorpe said.
Brandon Keenon pinned Central 145-pound veteran Tanner Swinehart, which, Thorpe said, was “a good win for a freshman.” Keenon kept it going when he got to the Classic, opening against Jeffery Jones of McLoughlin, a former Idaho state champion who was ranked fifth in the state coming into the match, and pinned him too.
“Those were big wins,” Thorpe said.
He said the Huskies’ performances at the Classic were characterized by the same attitude he’s seen in his wrestlers all season – unselfishness.
“Guys will move up a weight class, down a weight class, they will move out. The way they’re carrying themselves on the mat, I’m proud of them.”
Sweet Home opened with a 57-21 win over McLoughlin Friday, then rolled over Banks 78-3 before downing Ontario 63-7.
“We had some momentum and we kind of got a mindset of rolling over people,” Thorpe said.
On Saturday, the Huskies opened against Cascade, the defending state champion. It was a juggling act for Sweet Home, but the unselfishness paid off, Thorpe said.
“Cascade is a great team and a great coached team.” he said. “It was a barnburner with them that came down to the heavyweight match.”
But along the way, everybody else came to wrestle, he said.
“Bob Malloy at 145 wrestled his guts out, and we sent Trever Olson up to 152 and Tyler Cowger up to 160, and Quinn Wise, a 170-pounder wrestled at 182 all weekend. We’re not bumping up to bad kids. We’re talking good wrestlers. We did what we needed to do and we took that momentum and let it carry us.”
They won, 35-23 as Zach Gill pinned the Cougars’ James Cook to ice the match.
In the semifinals, the Huskies downed Scappoose 52-19 to qualify for the final against Crook County.
“The last time Crook County beat us by almost 30 points,” Thorpe said of a face-off between the two teams at Lebanon in December. “We wrestled a different match this time. We came them with everything we got.”
Keenon was too sick to wrestle and Ryan Adams had injured an ankle, so Thorpe pulled them, resulting in the two forfeits as he shifted everybody else around.
“We forfeited two weights and lost by 10,” he said.
Sophomore 106-pounder Tyler Schilling, middleweight Cowger – wrestling in a variety of divisions, and 195-pounder Wade Paulus pinned their way through the tournament.
“No one was a disappointment,” Thorpe said.
In the youth wrestling tournament Sunday, Sweet Home Mat Club’s Jackson Casteel took the 195-pound Schoolboy championship, while Kyle Sieminski was fourth in the 40-pound Bantam category, Travis Thorpe was fourth at 95-pound Novice, and Bo Baxter was fourth at 105-pound Novice.
The Huskies will wrestle at Elmira Thursday, Jan. 24, then go back on the road for Reser’s Tournament of Champions at Liberty High School in Hillsborough.
They will return home Jan. 31 for Senior Night against Stayton, Cottage Grove and Cascade.
