Wrestlers win bracket against big boys at Westview

Sweet Home lost one match, to Washington state power Snohomish, last weekend at the Westview Duals as the Huskies cruised to a bracket victory in the tournament.

“Snohomish is one of the better schools in Washington,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “We competed very well on the weekend. Our goal is to win, obviously, but we have a big focus on just getting better. We had some major efforts from some kids.”

The Huskies opened with a 55-24 victory over Aloha and followed that with wins over Cleveland (60-15), Woodburn (66-12), before falling to Snohomish 34-30.

Sweet Home then bounced back with a 54-18 win over Tualatin and then shut out St. Helens 84-0 to finish the qualifying rounds 5-1. It then beat Rogers of Washington 51-28 and McNary 51-19 for the bracket win.

Colton Schilling and Tyler Cowger swept their matches, Cowger pinning all his opponents. But Thorpe said the Huskies got contributions from a variety of team members.

“It’s not always going to be the same guys who win matches,” he said. “Colton Schilling, Tyler Cowger, you expect them to win every time they step on the mat. It’s the way they’re winning. They’re dominating matches. They’re doing their jobs.”

He listed Ryan Adams, Troy Hazelton, Aaron Blanchard, Nene Mauer and Quin Wise as turning in top performances. “We had some second guys who competed every time.”

Some of those competed on a renegade team, whose results aren’t listed below, but Blanchard, a freshman 106-pounder, lost one match in two days, Thorpe said.

“What we lack in talent we have a lot of kids making up with heart and character.”

The meet included 27 teams from Oregon and Washington, all the ones from Sweet Home 5A Division or larger.

“It’s fun to go up there and wrestle some people we don’t always get to wrestle,” Thorpe said.

Sweet Home will host its third of four home outings this Thursday, Jan. 3, an endowment meet with Glide, one of the top 3A teams in the state, at 6 p.m. Admission will be slightly higher due to the endowment status of the match, Thorpe said.
