Volleyball team victorious over Junction City

Sweet Home’s volleyball team winds down its season this week with a final match at No. 3 Elmira on Tuesday.

That comes after a 3-2 win for the Huskies over Junction City and a 3-1 loss to Cottage Grove.

Against Junction City on Tuesday, Oct. 16. the Huskies were hot and cold, winning the first game handily, 25-16, then letting the Tigers back into the match in a 25-9 loss in the second. Junction City took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 win in the third game before the Huskies rallied with 25-20 and 17-15 wins in the final games.

Senior Megan Graville led the team with 10 kills and sophomore Jordan Miller finished with nine kills and six blocks, with some assistance at the net from Harlee Brendle.

“We had talked in practice about blocking be our first line of defense and it was nice to see Jordan and Harlee get some blocks,” Coach Alicia Meier said.

“That helped a lot. Junction City had improved since the last time they played us.

“It was a good win. It’s kind of nice to see the girls battle, to really push al the way to the end.”

At Cottage Grove on Thursday, Oct. 18, Sweet Home won a game for the first time against the Lions in league action, but it wasn’t enough.

The Huskies rallied again after being blown out 25-7 in the first game, taking the second 25-20. But the Lions came back to win the next two games 25-12, 25-13.

“If the girls had wanted to, they could have won that match,” Meier said. “Cottage Grove was struggling. It was great to get that win in the second game.”

Graville finished with six kills and Miller had three to lead the team.
