Hiett places second for depleted cross-country team

Jakob Hiett led the Sweet Home boys Saturday with a second-place finish at the Rock n River Invitational held at Pleasant Hill’s Elijah Bristow State Park.

Hiett, a sophomore, finished in 16:57 – seven seconds off the personal best he ran last week at Philomath on a faster course.

The Husky boys finished 13th with 304 points, as they were missing three runners who normally would be running with the varsity. Marshfield placed first in the team competition (74), followed by South Albany (93), Philomath (97) and Crescent Valley (121).

Paige Sanders led the girls with a 23rd-place finish in 22:05 as the Huskies finished 11th in a field of 15 teams with 279 points. Ashland (30), Crescent Valley (86) and Central Catholic (124) were the top three girls teams, followed by Philomath (128) as the top 4A team.

“I thought the kids did well,” Coach Billy Snow said. “We had a couple who were off a little bit but we haven’t rested at all. We weren’t at full strength – that’s for sure.”
