For The New Era
The boys and girls water polo team traveled to Woodburm last Wednesday, where the boys faced another tough team that lost by one goal to defending state champion West Albany. The boys lost 24-6, but they, as well as the girls, are showing improvement each game.
Holden Greene scored a hat trick of three goals, with Cory Martin and Sebas Mauer scoring the other two. Alex Stupin had one assist and Martin added three. The Huskies had 16 shots on goal and 14 saves.
Even though the scores do not show improvement the players are improving. Coach Craig Martin stated he was proud of the fact the team never gave up trying, and never showed any signs of frustration or being down in the game.
The girls had their first victory of the early season by a score of 19-12. Sami Webb scored eight goals, Laura Gourley seven, Niccole Simmonds had two and Katie Kinney and Norajean Lemar each added one goal.
Kinney had seven assists, Niccole Simmonds had four, Laura Gourley and Norajean Lemar each had two and goalie Cheryl Wilson had one.
This was their best game so far this season as more players scored and played a very good defensive game with the Huskies’ faster swimmers, Sami Webb and Niccole Simmonds, getting back on defense to break up several offensive attacks by Woodburn.
The Huskies had 27 shots on goal and 12 saves.
Both games were played in a deep-water pool, which is much different than shallow and deep, especially for the goalkeepers.
