Girls place well in Jr. Olympics

Maria Kropf won the long jump in the Oregon Junior Olympics track and field championships held Saturday at Willamette University in Salem.

Kropf, who just completed her freshman year at Sweet Home High School, jumped 16-8 3/4 on her final attempt to win the event.

Freshman-to-be Jessica Stewart placed third in the long jump, with a best effort of 15-6.

Stewart is recovering from a leg injury, her father, Randy Stewart, said. But she was able to runa personal-best 27.06 in the 200 prelims and finished fifth in the final in 27.13, qualifying for the Northwest Regionals meet July 12-13 in Spokane, Wash., in both the 200 and the long jump.

Kropf qualified for regionals with a third-place finish in the 100 (12.92), as well as the long jump.
