Elmira 13, Sweet Home 5
Elmira overcame a 3-2 lead in a fourth- and fifth-inning rally to defeat the Huskies baseball team 13-5 in Sweet Home on March 12.
“Both teams had a lot of base runners, due to walks and hit batters,” Sweet Home Coach Dan Tow said. “The difference was they hit the ball and drove those runners in and we didn’t.
“We need much better production at the plate.”
Elmira scored a run in the first inning, but the Huskies answered with three runs. Elmira added another run in the second and then four each in the fourth and fifth inning to take the lead. The Huskies scored a couple in the fifth but did not score again.
Greg Sipe was the losing pitcher. J.P Williams pitched in relief. At bat, Sipe and Tyler Horner each went 1-3 with a single and an RBI, while Elmira collected 13 hits.
“I think they were a team we could’ve beaten,” Tow said. “We were ahead early on.”
Part of the problem for the Huskies was just a lack of experience, but a bigger part of it was confidence among the players, he said. It being the first time on varsity for many of the Huskies, “they’re capable hitters. They were nervous up there and had a couple of costly errors.”
With tough league opponents ahead, the Huskies really need to get some games in to get ready, Tow said, but the weather has been frustrating. Two games on Saturday and one on Monday were rained out, and he expected Tuesday’s game to be rained out as well.
The field needs about a day of sun to dry out enough for use, he said. “We need your readers to pray for sunshine, maybe for tomorrow at 2 o’clock.” That’s when the Huskies are scheduled to play at Willamette. The team is 0-2.
