Huskies split with JC in softball

Junction City 0,3

The Husky softball team split a doubleheader at Junction City Saturday, winning 2-0 and losing 3-2.

“We played very good defense and hit the ball hard today,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “Makenzie (Marchbanks) is starting to reach her form, which really helps us.

“Offensively, we hit the ball hard today, but it was one of those days that we hit right at them all day long.

“(Sara) Brocard is really doing a great job behind the plate, and Lacey Mink has started showing some really solid defensive skills.”

Marchbanks struck out nine batters in the first game and went 2 for 4 at the plate, with a double.

The second game, “we came out real slowly,” Hummer said. “We started with three errors in the first that gave them two unearned runs, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

“After the first inning, we played solid, but we cannot give good teams free runs and cannot settle for playing several good innings a game. We must be mentally tough enough to play seven innings.

At the plate Makenzie was “on fire,” Hummer said, collecting two more hits. Brocard went 2-3 with a homerun. Olivia Lake was 2-3 with a double.

“We out-hit them the entire game and hit several hard line drives right at them. Sometimes you have days that the ball just won;t drop in. Today was one of them. The hits will start falling. We are hitting the ball too hard for them not to.

“We must begin to play seven innings in the field, which I am certain will happen. We have work to do and we will not shy away from doing the work.”

Marchbanks struck out six batters in the second game.
