Two Mat Club grapplers win state kids titles

Six wrestlers placed of the 13 Sweet Home Mat Club members who competed at the Oregon Kid’s State Collegiate Championships in Coos Bay last weekend

Earning a State Championship title at 75 lb. Novice with five pins was Colton Schilling. Also placing in the tournament were Tyler Schilling, fourth in the 60-pound Midget class; Luke Melbye, sixth in 85-pound Schoolboy; Trever Olsen, fifth in 140-pound Novice, Nate Melcher, fourth in 140+-pound Novice, and Austin Bruijn, fourth in 140+ -pound Novice.

The Kid’s State tournament includes wrestlers from the 1A to 6A school divisions across the state competing for one state title.

“In Tyler Schilling and Luke Melbye we have two young men who have shared the podium for three straight years in a row at the same age and weight bracket,” said Coach Steve Schilling. “It’s difficult enough to get one wrestler on the podium, but to get two in such a large bracket is outstanding and quite an accomplishment for our wrestling program and these boys.”

Schilling said he is very proud of the wrestlers and their parents who put in the extra time and commitment to compete at the State Level. Many of the youngsters who wrestled in Coos Bay will continue into the Freestyle/Greco season with Coach Steve Thorpe this spring while playing baseball as well.
