Sweet Home’s track and field athletes got their first look at 4A competition Saturday, April 8, as they competed with eight other teams from the Oregon West and Sky Em conferences at the Philomath Invite.
The Huskies finished with multiple personal bests, though their only win came from Mason Lopez in the boys javelin competition, who threw 162-3, five feet short of his personal best but a winner for Sweet Home.
Junior Nathan Aker, in his first season of high school track, threw a 3½-foot personal best of 42-2 to place fifth in the shot, while junior Colin Nicholson, also a rookied to high school track competition, placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 37-5¾.
Freshman Selah Wright was Sweet Home’s top performer in all three throwing events.
The Huskies continue to see new faces appear in competition this season as they headed to Newport Tuesday, April 11, before participating Friday, April 14, at the North Marion Twilight meet.
They then will host a pair of home meets, a dual with Cascade on April 18 and the Meet of Champions April 22, which will feature qualifying athletes representing top 1A through 4A talent from throughout northwestern and coastal Oregon.
